Genshin Impact’s PlayStation Success Has Put Pressure On Xbox

I was years old today when I found out that Microsoft was trying to turn around Genshin impact in an exclusive Xbox console. According to sources, the failure to do so is one of the main reasons why the publisher is trying to make deals with Chinese game studios.

According to ReutersMicrosoft was in talks with Genshin developer HoYoverse during the game was still at the beginning of the development cycle. However, the two companies failed to reach an agreement. When the game finally launched in September 2020, it was available on PC, mobile and PlayStation, but not on Xbox. From May, the game made an estimate $3 billion in microtransactions on mobile. So it’s safe to say that it has also made significant amounts of money on PlayStation.

These games would be a great boon to publishers looking to entice more players into their subscription programs, which allow people to play free games for a fixed monthly fee, often on PC, Xbox and sometimes cloud gaming (95 percent of Chinese games are free to play). I didn’t think it would be a big problem to be able to play a game on my phone, PC and console. But it has slowly pushed me to spend more hours in Genshin than I would have done otherwise.

PlayStation had been catching up with Xbox’s live service capabilities for years, and HoYoverse’s RPG has been a huge boon to its portfolio. In May from Sony finacial reportPlayStation listed Genshin next Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzoneand Apex Legends as major titles driving PS Store spending. So not alone Genshin earning a staggering amount of money overall: console exclusivity is one of the main titles driving PlayStation’s success.

The major console makers are engaged in an arms race for these games, but Chinese studios aren’t just passively accepting everything they’re offered. A company that previously signed a deal with Game Pass is reportedly awaiting another exclusivity deal while the game is still in development.

“We’re not signing it yet because we think that when we have fully completed our game, it will have an even better offer,” a representative said. Reuters.
