This fall Law & Order: SVU there will be a great disturbance of the force.
After more than a decade on the track, Kelli Giddish will be handing in her badge as Det. Amanda Rollins during Season 24. The exact timing of her departure remains unclear, but sources say her final episode will air in the first half of the season.
Giddish confirmed the news in a statement to TVLine.
“I wanted to address the chatter I’ve seen online and let everyone know that this is indeed my last season on Law & Order: SVU‘ said the actress. “Playing Rollins has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life. I was lucky enough to be part of the Law & authority family for the past 12 years. There is simply no other character on TV quite like Rollins. She has grown and changed, and so have I. I started on this show when I was in my late twenties and I’m grateful that I got to spend so many of my adult years with Rollins in my life.
“I want to thank Dick Wolf, Mariska Hargitay, Warren Leight, Peter Jankowski, NBC, Universal Television, all my co-stars, every crew member and all the writers here for our incredible work together over the past 12 years,” Giddish continued. “I’m so excited to take in all the things I’ve learned in my time” SVU and put them on all that is to come.”
NBC declined to comment on this story.
NBC also won’t comment on how Giddish will be written out, but an SVU insider reveals that Rollins will face a traumatic event early in season 24, though it’s unclear whether the incident sets the stage for her impeachment. One thing is certain: her absence will have major consequences for Peter Scanavino’s Carisi, with whom Rollins has a romantic bond.
As we first reported, SVU will kick off season 24 (under new showrunner David Graziano) on Thursday, September 22 via an unprecedented three-show crossover with the recently revived Mothership series and fellow spin-off Organized crime.
Giddish joined SVU at the start of Season 13 in 2011 along with fellow newbie Danny Pino (who left at the end of Season 16). The pair were brought in to fill the void left by Chris Meloni’s sudden departure.
Giddish’s exit is one of a handful of casting changes that the Law & authority universe this fall. Scroll down to see who’s in and who’s not Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime.
