LA Galaxy vs. Sounders, full-time: Late penalty leaves it level

Date:

FULL TIME: The Sounders came back from a 2-0 deficit to eventually lead 3-2, but were undone by a VAR injury time penalty. The point was good enough to take the Sounders to the No. 7 spot in the Western Conference, at least temporarily.

GALAXY 3, SOUNDERS 3: The VAR awarded a penalty in stoppage time after a header hit Xavier Arreaga’s arm and Dejan Joveljić scored the goal.

GALAXY 2, SOUNDERS 3: Jordan Morris completed the Sounders’ comeback from 2-0 down, rebounding on a header from Yeimar Gomez-Andrade.

GALAXY 2, SOUNDERS 2: Just moments after the Sounders hit the woodwork twice in one series, the Sounders found the equalizer on a header by Raúl Ruidíaz on a cross by Nicolás Lodeiro.

GALAXY 2, SOUNDERS 1: Kelyn Rowe put away a perfect feed from Raúl Ruidíaz in the 53rd minute to halve the deficit.

GALAXY 2, SOUNDERS 0: Victor Vazquez caught Stefan Frei off his line and scored on a chip from the edge of the penalty area 42 minutes into the game after a period in which the Sounders had been fairly dominant.

GALAXY 1, SOUNDERS 0: Chicharito Hernandez got the Galaxy on the board in the 10th minute, collected a pass in the penalty area and easily passed Stefan Frei. It is the seventh time in 10 games that the Sounders have conceded the first goal.

LINEUPS: The Sounders returned to a three-defender formation for the first time since July 13, but will be deploying a 3-5-2 for the first time this year. The move was somewhat necessitated by an injury to Cristian Roldan, who was effectively replaced in the lineup by Kelyn Rowe.

There are nine games left in the 2022 regular season. The Seattle Sounders are 10th in the Western Conference but just one point away from a spot in the playoffs and could jump all the way to sixth place tonight with a victory over the LA Galaxy. That has been a vaguely familiar storyline for several weeks and will likely remain so for the coming weeks.

This Galaxy game has some added significance as they are one of the teams that will battle the Sounders for these final playoff spots. Like the Sounders, the Galaxy have struggled in recent weeks (although they have a resounding win over the Whitecaps). The Galaxy is 2-5-0 over their last seven and 3-6-1 over their last 10. That’s one point more than their last 10 than the Sounders.

The Galaxy’s biggest problem was in defence, conceding 19 goals during this 10-game period. They have also conceded at least two goals in half of those games and at least three in four of them.

Their struggle was almost a mirror image of the Sounders, who only scored three goals in this ten-game streak, but were limited to just nine goals scored.

  • The Sounders have a nine-game undefeated run against the Galaxy (5-0-3) dating back to 2018 and winning 3-2 earlier this year. The Sounders went 2-0-3 on the road during that stretch.
  • That overlaps almost perfectly with Raul Ruidíaz’s time with the Sounders, including eight goals in eight career appearances against the Galaxy.
  • The Galaxy are coming off a 5-2 win over the Whitecaps on Saturday. It included their first half of four goals since 2016.
  • Galaxy substitutes have netted 24 goals this year (10 goals, 14 assists), with Dejan Jovelic leading the way (6 goals, 3 assists).
