Marvel’s Avengers Will Die With Spider-Man Stuck On PlayStation

Late last week, Square Enix announced it was under siege 2020 live service game, Marvel’s Avengerswill not receive any new content or major updates after March 31. And all official support for the game will end on September 30, 2023, with digital sales also ending on that date. While you can still play it offline and online with friends after these dates, it’s basically game over for the troubled online action game. But even after death, developer Crystal Dynamics just confirmed that the Spider-Man character will remain exclusive to the PS4 and PS5 versions.

This saga started then, shortly before the release of Marvel’s AvengersCrystal Dynamics announced that Spider-Man would be added to the game at a later date. However, the famous web-slinger wouldn’t come to the Xbox or PC versions. Instead, PS4 (and later PS5) players only would have access to the character. It took longer than expectedbut finally in November 2021 Spider-Man appeared in the PlayStation versions. At the time, fans thought it was because Spider-Man was owned by Sony and Spidey was therefore only on PlayStation. (That’s not the case, since Sony only owns the movie rights to the character.) But the famed superhero has since appeared in Midnight sunbathing on all platforms. So it’s not like Spider-Man can only exist on PlayStation consoles.

But still, Crystal Dynamics confirmed in a January 20 blog post that Spider-Man still won’t coming to Xbox or PC. What a pity! Even with the botched live-service game dying, none of Spidey’s corporate overlords can agree to let him run free on all platforms for a few days. Avengers players still enjoying the game.

Marvel/PlayStation

Kotaku reached out to Marvel, PlayStation, Square Enix, Embracer Group, and Crystal Dynamics for comment, but did not hear back prior to release.

I already know that people are claiming in the comments or quoting retweets that Sony owns Spider-Man outright (it doesn’t) or that Sony can’t legally allow the character to appear on other platforms (it can). Yet he is in Midnight sunbathing, a game released on Xbox, PlayStation and PC. He is also in mobile games released on iOS, Android and PC.

So it’s entirely possible to get Spidey to appear on other consoles if the people pulling the strings, making the deals and making the contracts agree. But apparently no one cares enough Avengers and its community to muster one last gesture of goodwill for players and make the web-slingin’ hero appear on Xbox and PC. If you want to play the full version of the game after support ends in September, you’ll need a PlayStation. Say it with me again: console-exclusive DLC sucks.
