Michigan election results 2022: The latest

Michigan’s report is nearly complete as millions of voters cast their ballots in a midterm election Tuesday with huge implications for the state’s future.

While the total unofficial results aren’t expected until Wednesday morning at the earliest, most of the results are already in tabular form.

Michiganders had the chance to elect a governor, attorney general, secretary of state, and all members of the Michigan State Legislature. Proposals to change Michigan’s constitution — primarily around abortion rights, but also regarding votes and term limits — were also central.

Amid completely redesigned political maps and one congressional district less, the battle for federal representation was heated and exceptionally expensive.

What’s at stake?

Marquee races for governor and whether or not to amend Michigan’s constitution to include abortion rights received a lot of attention. Polls showed that Democratic incumbent Gretchen Whitmer is generally outperforming Republican challenger Tudor Dixon, but there’s still a way for the Norton Shores businesswoman to make Whitmer a one-year governor.

Proposal 3, the Abortion Amendment, also did well in polls heading into Election Day, but opponents spent more than $16 million arguing the measure was both too extreme and confusing to include in the state constitution.

Voters also elected a Secretary of State and Attorney General. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat from Detroit, took on GOP challenger Kristina Karamo, and Republican Attorney General Matthew DePerno challenged incumbent Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel.

Control over the Michigan legislature and a slew of local races, from county millages to school board races, are also up for grabs.

When will we know the Michigan election results?

The official final results will not come until weeks after the county and state recruitment agencies confirm the results. But in smaller cities, unofficial results could be finalized as early as Tuesday evening. However, in places like Detroit and Grand Rapids, experts don’t expect the final unofficial results until Wednesday.

This is partly due to the fact that more than 2 million people cast their votes by absentee ballot. Michigan law states that clerks cannot count these ballots until Election Day – the whole process is more difficult than counting votes cast in person on Election Day, and therefore takes more time. It also has the potential to create what some call a “red mirage,” or a scenario where Republicans seem to do well after the vote count on Election Day, losing significant ground as absentee votes add up to the total. are added.

While clerks in the state and nation warned of these foreseeable problems and warned of patience, similar cries were not heeded in 2020 when former President Donald Trump and many others claimed sweeping electoral fraud without presenting credible evidence.
