MILLIONS of Americans will receive a tax refund worth up to $1,050 starting next month thanks to a utility.

California will send refunds totaling $9.5 billion to an estimated 23 million residents between October 2022 and January 2023.

The “Middle Class Tax Refund” is part of a $12 billion relief plan approved in June by California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The payout is between $200 and $1,050 per eligible household and will be sent between October 2022 and mid-January 2023.

On June 26, Mr. Newsom tweeted: “NEW: Millions of Californians will receive up to $1,050 as part of a NEW middle class tax credit.

“That’s more money in your pocket to help you fill your gas tank and put food on the table.”

Who is eligible?

To qualify for an exemption, California residents must submit their 2020 tax returns by October 15, 2021.

In addition, in 2020 you must have lived and still live in California for at least six months.

In addition, anyone who was eligible to be claimed as a dependent in 2020 will be disqualified from receiving the discount.

How much can you get?

Anyone who has reported an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $500,001 or more in California is not eligible for the payment.

The refund amounts are based on the CA AGI stated on your 2020 tax return.

  • CA AGI: $250,001 to $500,000 – $600 with a dependent, $400 without a dependent

Head of household or eligible widower

  • CA AGI: $150,000 or less – $700 with a dependent, $350 without a dependent
  • CA AGI: $150,001 to $250,000 – $500 with a dependent, $250 without a dependent
  • CA AGI: $250,001 to $500,000 – $400 with a dependent, $200 without a dependent

Single or married/registered domestic partner submit separately

  • CA AGI: $150,000 or less – $700 with a dependent, $350 without a dependent
  • CA AGI: $150,001 to $250,000 – $500 with a dependent, $250 without a dependent
  • CA AGI: $250,001 to $500,000 – $400 with a dependent, $200 without a dependent

The CA Franchise Tax Board said those who filed electronically and received their 2020 tax refund by direct deposit should also get the refund as an instant deposit.

Otherwise you will receive your payment on a debit card.

Help in other states

A number of other states will also provide aid payments in the coming months.

Alaska: Alaska has approved an immediate payment of $3,200 for September, through a combination of energy aid and the dividend from the state’s Permanent Fund.

Hawaii: Depending on residents’ income and tax liability, residents of Hawaii and Virginia will receive tax credits that are likely to ship in September or October.

Illinois: On September 12, Illinois will send a tax credit to individuals earning less than $200,000.

Colorado: Residents get checks for $750 and $1,500 for couples because of Colorado’s income surplus.
