No witnesses to Kiely Rodni leaving Tahoe party, officials say

Date:

Law enforcement officers still haven’t identified a single person who saw Kiely Rodni leave a camping party in Tahoe on Aug. 6, officials say.

“People don’t talk to us,” Angela Musallam, a public information officer for the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, told the New York Post on Thursday. Musallam said many of the 200-300 in attendance at the party were minors and may fear legal trouble if they come forward. The sheriff’s office has repeatedly stressed that people should come forward without fear of repercussions because the investigators’ only concern is finding out what happened to Kiely.

“A lot of people from the party may be in college or about to go to college and they are afraid that if they say something they will ruin their future,” Musallam told the Post.

Since the night Kiely disappeared, the only surefire lead investigators are her last known location: the Prosser Family Campground in Truckee. “We’re just trying to piece together those last moments she was at the party to find out where she went and with whom,” Kiely’s mom Lindsey Rodni-Nieman told NBC Bay Area last week.

Kiely Rodni was caught on CCTV footage at a Truckee company on August 5, 2022, shortly before attending the party from which she went missing.

Kiely has been missing for over two weeks. Here’s the latest on her disappearance:

Where was Kiely Rodni last seen?

According to witnesses, Kiely arrived at the Prosser Family Campground in Truckee on Friday evening, August 5, before a party of about 200-300 teens and young adults. Kiely lives about 20 miles away at the Lost Trail Lodge, which is run by her family.

Friends remember seeing her at the campground on August 6 between 12:30 and 1:30. Also missing is her silver 2013 Honda CRV, police say her phone was out of order around the time she was last seen and has not been turned on. The last ping was somewhere near Prosser Lake.

Did she talk to anyone before she disappeared?

Kiely spoke to a number of people shortly before she disappeared. Her mother, Lindsey Rodni-Nieman, said Kiely texted to say she would be “coming straight home” in about 45 minutes. “I told her to be safe and that I loved her. And she said, ‘Okay, Mom, I love you too,'” Rodni-Nieman told ABC News. “She never came home.”

A friend told a conflicting story, saying that Kiely planned to spend the night at the campground with her friends and was too drunk to drive home. Kiely’s friend told FOX40 that that night they texted as usual and chatted about their days until about 10:30 PM. He also said he asked her to be safe at the party.

Kiely Rodni (16) has been missing since August 6, 2022 after he disappeared during a party at a Truckee campground.

“I was like, okay. Be safe. Don’t do stupid things,” he said.

Which areas were searched?

Local law enforcement, the FBI and volunteer search teams are conducting searches in the area around the Prosser Lake Campground. Swimming and diving teams continue to investigate nearby Prosser Lake, which is extremely murky. “In a dive operation like this, it’s almost like going into the water blind, and you’re actually searching with your hands,” said Captain Sam Brown of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office Saturday. “Because once you start maneuvering on the ground, it’s like going through mud. These are heavy operations.”

Divers of the Adventures With Purpose YouTube channel, which has more than 2 million subscribers, say they are searching the Tahoe area for any sign of Kiely.

“We’re here and we’re going to cover every inch of water in the region until we find her and make sure she’s not there,” diver Doug Bishop wrote on Instagram on Saturday.

Last weekend, a search and rescue team found a possible “cemetery” at the Prosser campground. FBI teams cordoned off and carefully excavated the area; it turned out to be the grave of a dead dog.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office is asking volunteers to download the CalTopo app to track the areas searched. Volunteers can meet at the Truckee Community Center on Mondays to learn more.

“The area has been walked, driven, flown, searched. They’re getting tighter and tighter for grids,” Brown said. “Right now we’re looking for something smaller in terms of evidence, as opposed to cars, people, things like that, even phones. We’re trying to make it even tighter.”

Has Kiely Rodni been kidnapped?

Since the police have no clues, they cannot rule out any scenario. Since her vehicle is still missing, her case was classified as a possible kidnapping.

What do we know about Kiely Rodni?

Kiely is 5 feet 7 and 115 pounds and has blond hair, brown eyes and a nose ring. She has multiple piercings and a tattoo of the number 17 on her ribs. She was last seen wearing a black bodysuit, green Dickies pants and possibly a black Lana del Rey hoodie borrowed from the party. The video shot at the party also shows her wearing a white and pink hoodie at one point, but sheriff’s officers aren’t sure if she was wearing that sweatshirt when she disappeared.

Her silver Honda CRV has California registration 8YUR127.

Though he was only 16, Kiely graduated from high school in the spring. “My daughter is a real A-student on her way to UC Santa Cruz,” father Daniel Rodni said at a community meeting last week. ‘She goes to university at sixteen. This is Tahoe. This shouldn’t happen here. We need answers.’

Anyone with information about Kiely’s disappearance is requested to immediately contact the Placer County Sheriff’s Office tipline at 530-581-6320, Option 7. Callers may remain anonymous. Tips can also be sent to [email protected], or anonymous photos or videos from the party can be posted here.
