Holden Caulfield is a whiny little brat who is more of a punk than a literary hero…this according to Jahkara Smithwho has a great hot take that triggered Twitter.
The star of “NOS4A2” posted a video this week analyzing the main character of JD Salinger‘Catcher in the Rye’ — delving into one scene in particular, where she says HC got what he deserved…
Jahkara explains that Holden has an idealistic view of women, but when it comes to getting busy, he’s really not up for it – as evidenced by an encounter with a prostitute, for which he ends up paying. JS POV…serves him well as he was wasting that working woman’s time.
She goes on to suggest that he is actually the blueprint of a modern school shooter… because once he gets in trouble, he has visions to kill the whore/pimp.
There’s a lot more to her book review, so see for yourself – but let’s say, a handful on the bird app aren’t too kind to her analysis of what’s considered an American classic. We’ll spare you all the tweets, but actually… some would argue that she’s simplistic in her analysis of the character, dissecting him without much-needed context.
For starters, people in her entries defending Holden… say he’s clearly a troubled boy dealing with major trauma (brother’s death) and likely sexual abuse.
Unclear if Jahkara has digested that, but anyway…she seems to think the novel just isn’t all it’s presented. In fact, there are quite a few people who really agree with her — they say that the premise of this teen trying to maintain innocence… is kind of lame.
The book has received a lot of attention in recent years — with many people arguing that ‘Catcher’ is problematic at its core. That could be true… under a 21st century lens, at least. Remember, this thing was published in the 50’s… a very different time in America.
As usual the eye of the (fake) viewer.
