‘Oh. We’ll get back to you…’

A revamped elimination format is on America’s Got Talent this season, which takes only the top two public votes of the week to the finals – without Instant Save or any input from the judges panel. As a result, each one-hour live results show feels more like five hours long, with hunted host Terry Crews bravely struggling to come up with new ways to slow down and build the tension, while slowly reducing the number of participants each week. from 11 to five to three to two.

There was little excitement in Wednesday’s results, as the top two were—just as I predicted—the Dolly Parton-backed country trio Chapel Hart and the artsy magician Yu Hojin. (They join last week’s top two, saxophonist Avery Dixon and country crooner Drake Milligan, in the Season 17 finale, which airs Sept. 13.) airtime by another magician — Jon Dorenbos, Season 11 finalist, third place — to act. And let’s say, if Jon had done this magic trick when he entered… AGT in 2016 he would probably do that not made it to the top three that season.

A fan favorite among the old AGT viewers, Jon also participated on America’s Got Talent: The Champions and made it to that final in 2019, so fans were excited to see him perform this week. Simon Cowell even said to him, “I missed you, Jon!” But Jon’s return was not as triumphant as expected.

Jon’s trick this week involved asking Simon and the other judges – Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara – to pick random numbers from a box and letters from a board, and based on this information, he guessed the numbers and colors. of four football shirts that are secretly hung in four gym cabinets on stage. He correctly predicted three of the jerseys, but when Heidi showed her number 8, Jon paused awkwardly and said, “Oh. Well, well… we’ll get back to you.’ Now it was his turn to buy time.

Finally, Jon opened Heidi’s locker and revealed a jersey with the number 20 instead. (Oddly enough, both Simon and Heidi had taken 8s from the magician’s box.) As a former professional soccer player for the Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Philadelphia Eagles and New Orleans Saints, however, Jon is used to performing under pressure—and used to fumbling every now and then and accepting defeat—so he handled the tricky situation quite deftly on live television. And at least he guessed Heidi’s color, red, correctly.

“I thought you’d pick twenty. It doesn’t matter,’ Jon shrugged. “Sometimes in life it’s okay to be one off – because guess what, honey? Every time I step on this stage, you all make me feel like a rock star. Be part of the AGT team, I love every second. Whether it’s in the locker room or my life, I try to be the best teammate I can be and bring my A-game too, honey. May we all make the decision to be the best teammate we can be in this world.” A quartet of cheerleaders wearing the jury jerseys (including, yes, Heidi’s misnumbered red ones) and Daisy Duke shorts leapt out to the studio audience. which applauded supportively.

Dorenbos supporters were also sympathetic on Twitter, so hopefully they’ll still flock to see him take part in the revue of “America’s Got Talent Las Vegas Live” at the Luxor – which was ostensibly what his appearance was supposed to advertise this week. Meanwhile 11 more AGT hopefuls will compete next Tuesday for their own Vegas residency and a $1 million prize as the Season 17 qualifiers continue.

And as it turned out tonight, anything can happen on live TV. See you then.
