Nine people were injured, two seriously, when multiple gunmen fired a barrage of at least 40 rounds Saturday night at a crowd gathered on a sidewalk outside a Philadelphia bar, authorities said.

The attackers fled the chaotic scene in the Kensington area of ​​the city in a vehicle and remained free on Sunday morning.

Asked at a press conference whether the gunmen posed a threat to the community, Deputy Commissioner John Stanford noted the number of wounded and the bullet casings lying on the street outside Jack’s Famous Bar, saying, “I think that’s a threat to public safety. .”

The shooting took place around 10:45 p.m. as the neighborhood was buzzing with more people than usual enjoying an unseasonably warm November night, Stanford said.

He said a group mingled on the sidewalk outside the bar when several gunmen exited a black vehicle sitting in the middle of East Allegheny Avenue, near Kensington Avenue, and opened fire on the crowd without warning.

“At this point, it appears that these individuals may have seen someone they wanted to shoot at, exited the vehicle and just started firing,” Stanford said, adding that investigators don’t yet know who the target was or a motive for the murder. attack.

Stanford said the shooting took place despite a heavy police presence already in the area. He said officers walking at a rhythm heard the gunfire and rushed to help the wounded men and women as the gunmen ran back to the dark vehicle and fled. He also noted that a narcotics task force was half a block from where the shooting took place.

“We have some cheeky individuals in this town who don’t care. They don’t care how many police officers are here and some don’t care how many people are here,” Stanford said.

He said investigators have found at least 40 pieces of ballistic evidence from the crime scene and plan to search surveillance videos from businesses in the area in hopes of identifying the attackers.

He said seven of the victims were in stable condition and two in critical condition.

The shooting happened amid 5% declines in both homicides and heavy weapon attacks in Philadelphia in the first 10 months of this year, compared to the same period in 2021, according to the latest police crime statistics. Philadelphia surpassed its annual homicide record in 2021, with 562 homicides.
