A teenager convicted of murdering her rapist escaped custody. Pieper Lewis’s story made national headlines when she was convicted in September. Jerry Evans, Executive Director of the 5th Judicial District Dept. of Corrections, confirmed to KCCI on Saturday that Lewis escaped from custody at age 6. :19 pm on Friday. Evans said Lewis cut off her tracker but wasn’t sure where she was going. Lewis was 15 years old when she admitted she killed 37-year-old Zachary Brooks in Des Moines in 2020. Lewis said she was a victim of human trafficking and said Brooks raped her several times before killing him. A Polk County judge sentenced Lewis to five years’ probation and a suspended sentence. The deferred verdict means it can be removed from Lewis’s file. Lewis was also ordered to pay $150,000 to Brooks’ family. A GoFundMe page set up for Lewis in September cost more than half a million dollars. An arrest warrant has been issued for Lewis. A probation violation report was made Friday, requesting a hearing on the violation of probation upon her arrest and ordering that her deferred sentences be revoked and her original sentence be imposed.
