Season 01 Reloaded Adds A Raid And…Soccer?

If you like football and PvE shooter experiences, the latest Duty Season 01 Reloaded has a double whammy for you. Modern Warfare II gets the very first one Codfish raided while War zone has a limited time event for all foosball fans. My personal favorite mode, DMZgot some love too!

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and the free-to-play battle royale mode War zone 2.0 just received a substantial content update. Offers traditional team-based multiplayer game types, battle royales and PvE modes such as DMZ, Codfish has a bunch of different modes these days. As such, updates like today’s Season 01 Reloaded are packed with new stuff for the game’s many modes. The usual tweaks, both subtle and obvious – shotgun damage certainly feels weaker – are there too. Let’s get into it.

Call of Duty’s First raid

Yes, today Codfish got his first hit. Codfish is notDestiny or World of Warcraftso it’s easy to imagine dozens of pranksters running around in League skins hopping through the corners. But fear not: The all-new Raid mode is a three-person mission (no matchmaking) available inside Modern Warfare II.

This means you have to buy the $70 full version of the game to play it. But that is not everything. Codfish also requires you to do one of the following to unlock the raid:

  • Complete a specific Daily Challenge in Multiplayer or Special Ops
  • Place in the top 20 in each War zone 2.0 Battle Royale Playlist
  • Exfiltrate DMZ with $30,000 in cash

Doing any of these will get you a Raid Assignment, which lasts for a week. You need a Raid Assignment to play the raid.

These tasks are not too heavy, so most people should be able to start the raid quickly. But then what do you do? Well, the Season 01 Reloaded update describes the raid as an “exciting mix of combat and puzzles for three-person teams to explore.” But it is also connected with it MWIIthe campaign story. Since this is the first raid, billed as “Episode 1”, we probably still have something to look forward to.

The story picks up from the end of Modern Warfare II‘s campaign. And if you ask me, that’s not a bad thing. The first half of Modern Warfare II got so bored I wanted to play Mist like a palate cleanser, but honestly the second half got really fun. We may even be treated more sexy whispers from our boy Ghost.

While the raid homework and matchmaking requirements are a drag, I think the general concept of the raid concept has potential, and it’s certainly fun in games like Destiny. Codfish sure as hell has the crunchy mechanics to make it satisfying, so let’s see how it goes.

War zone 2.0 World Cup

While I’ve certainly never thought, “I wish there were more sports in my video games,” I do know that some people love that big football thing going on right now. Codfish is here to satisfy your sports ball love with a limited-time mode featuring a big soccer ball, a regular-sized field, ATVs, and shock sticks. The first team to score five goals wins.

If I’m being honest, you might be better off spending your time with Rocket League or kind of foreign Halo custom game. The sentiment is appreciated, but this mode feels a little too crazy during my initial playtests.

The War zone The World Cup is from 14 to 23 December.

DMZ changes and updates

If you like DMZ, Santa came early. There is a new area, “Building 21” and brand new keys scattered around Al Mazrah. They grant access to a mysterious new location “outside Al Mazrah and in a hyper-dangerous new area of DMZ.” While I’m more than used to hyperdangerous BS in DMZother additions should hopefully help survive the game’s most awesome mode a little better.

While there’s no mention of fixing the telepathic AI’s ability to blast you through goddamn walls, DMZ will now see more self revives, gas masks, field upgrades, platform carriers, backpacks, and a lot less stuff you don’t need, namely electronic components and toothpaste. RIP your oral hygiene.

A new option allows eliminated players to join an enemy squad by begging for help. I haven’t tried this out yet, but to me it sounds more like offer help out. Anyway, sometimes it’s really frustrating when another operator team knocks you out when you weren’t even interested in screwing them. At least now you have a chance to bounce back faster.

The DMZ victory screen shows an earned advantage.

Successful exfiltration will now also award a random perk; perks like Scavenger, for example. You get more for each subsequent successful exfil, making a successful exit even more valuable.

Kotaku has reached out to Activision to ask for clarification on the changes to backpacks, which apparently offer a third weapon slot if you’ve equipped a medium or large pack. This seems to be how backpacks used to work, but maybe I’m missing a nice detail.

Season 01 New map and weapon balance changes

Sit down, because you’re about to get very happy or very angry: Shotguns no longer shoot a fully armored opponent. That means chuckles like me running around with sound-dampening shotguns firing silent one-hit shots like we’re Anton Chigurh or something, out of luck. But that’s okay, because idiots strapping a riot shield to their back will now suffer reduced movement speed and melee damage. Serves them well.

You’ll want it check the patch notes for details when using the MX9, M13B, Kastov-74u, VEL 47, Basilisk, .50 GS, Expedite 12, or JOKR.

Modern Warfare II‘s main multiplayer modes also get a familiar location. Consignment, a classic Codfish card, will feature a few changes according to a tweet from the official Codfish account a few days ago:

And while I’m sure many will have fond memories of Shipment, I’m here to warn you about it. Folks, I played two rounds on this map and it was my most nonsensical, frustrating shooter experience in recent memory. MWII already has a blazing fast TTK, so a map of narrow corridors at night, overcast with tons of smoke from explosions and smoke grenades, means this is nothing but a pre-fire fest of literally three seconds-to-you-dead nonsense. But your mileage may vary.

Season 01 Reloaded Quality of Life Changes

Don’t you hate it when you activate an XP bonus token and can’t see how much time is left? That changes today. Remaining time on a bonus token is now displayed in the lobby and you can even activate them in the middle of the game in the pause menu. I know I forget to activate it all the time, so that’s a huge plus.

But maybe that’s one of my personal favorite changes here joining a game that is already in progress does not count as a loss if you lose. I get mid-game participation. You have to keep the servers running, I think. But nothing is worse than getting into a game that is clearly doomed and too far gone to save. If win/loss stats are important to you, worry no more.

A number of other minor changes include tweaks to the UI, the addition of a ping wheel toggle, and UI elements that clarify weapon tuning capabilities and stat indicators. Dutys armor and upgrade system can be a bit mind bogglingso it’s nice to see some attention there.

All in all, there are a lot of cool things to check out. The DMZ features are by far the most interesting to me, but I’d be lying if I said the heist wasn’t a tantalizing siren song, especially if there’s more to come. Once I manage to get two other players together, I’ll be sure to report back on how this strange new addition develops.
