Suspect intended to kidnap Nancy Pelosi and “break her kneecaps,” San Francisco DA says

David Wayne DePapethe man accused of burglary House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s House and Violently Attacks Her Husbandintended to kidnap her and potentially break “her kneecaps,” he said, according to court documents.

He told the San Francisco police after his arrest that, “If Nancy [Pelosi] If she told DePape the “truth,” he would let her go, and if she “lie,” he would “break her kneecaps,” so she had to be driven to Congress.

Nancy Pelosic said in a statement Monday night that “Paul is making steady progress in what will be a long recovery process.” Paul Pelosi was hospitalized after the attack and underwent what the speaker’s office described as “successful surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands”.

The suspect had attacked Pelosi’s home to confront the Speaker of the House, interim San Francisco attorney Brooke Jenkins said at a news conference Monday. DePape reportedly forced his way through a glass back door to the second floor of the house, where Paul Pelosi was sleeping. He then woke Paul Pelosi, who was dressed in a pajama shirt and boxers, and asked where his wife was, according to Jenkins.

Paul Pelosi then tried to get to the elevator at the Pelosi house, Jenkins said, and asked to go to the bathroom, where he called 911. The defendant then realized that Paul Pelosi had made a phone call, Jenkins said. Two officers soon arrived, and when they did, they saw the defendant holding a hammer, hitting Pelosi with it, Jenkins said.

The FBI affidavit filed in the federal case against DePape also said that San Francisco police “recovered cable ties in Pelosi’s bedroom and in the hallway near the front door of the Pelosi residence.”

Law enforcement officers also searched DePape’s backpack at the Pelosi residence and found “including a roll of tape, white rope, a hammer, a pair of rubber and cloth gloves, and a journal,” the affidavit said. It said Paul Pelosi said he had never seen DePape before.

DePape, 42, is charged with attempted murder, burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder and threats against a government official and their family, Jenkins said.

Jenkins said investigators believe DePape planned to kill Paul Pelosi and that his actions were politically motivated. “What is clear, based on the evidence we have so far, is that this house and the speaker herself were specifically targeted by the defendant,” Jenkins said.

During the press conference, Jenkins also called on leaders and citizens to “pay attention to the words we say and to tone down the volume of our political rhetoric.”

DePape was also charged Monday with federal assaults on the immediate family member of a federal official and attempted kidnapping of a federal official. He will appear before a court in San Francisco on Tuesday.

DePape also had a list of people he wanted to target, law enforcement sources informed about the investigation have told CBS News. The sources said he may have been planning to attack more people had he not been arrested after attacking Pelosi.
