The Last Of Us TV Show Looks Just Like The Original Video Game

as play a remake of a game that has already been remastered don’t float your boat, maybe you fancy a live action The last of us TV show that’s almost a shot-for-shot remake of Naughty Dog’s 2013 PS3 hit? Yes? Well, looks like HBO may have got you covered.

In a tweet with several scenes from the recent TLoU TV show teaser trailerHBO has revealed how closely the upcoming series will align with the game’s framing, pace, and even character expressions. The footage shows a sort of parity with the source material we’re not used to seeing in live-action video game edits. Of course, fans can appreciate this, as video game adaptations are often skewed for straying too far from the original work that made them popular in the first place.

News from a The last of us television adaptation broke for the first time in March 2020. Craig Mazin, the writer behind HBOs Chernobyl, along with Naughty Dog’s very own Neil Druckmann, sought to bring Joel and Ellie’s story of struggle and survival in a post-apocalyptic America to life. HBO, Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are all working together on what Druckmann called this year’s Summer Game Fest “the most authentic video game adaptation yet.And from the eight-second clip HBO tweeted today, Druckmann may not have exaggerated.

Lately, live-action video game adaptations have become not only more frequent, but also better. Detective Pikachu and the recent Sonic movies have all shown that, with the right production and intentions, a video game can actually translate into excellent movies and television. Even leaks of the set of the coming precipitation tv show reveal a surprising level of authenticity. Given that The last of us games already strove for cinematic flair, perhaps unsurprisingly, at least from the 20 or so seconds we’ve seen, that seems to translate much of the tone well.

it should be noted that The last of us has very clear connections with the world of film and literature. The original game is very reminiscent of the 2009 movie The route, which was itself an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s 2006 novel of the same name. And post-apocalyptic settings are no stranger to memorable television and film, whether that be AMC’s better seasons. The living Dead or the 2007 remake of I am a legendto cite two examples.

What really seems to be happening The last of us‘Television adaptation by itself is how literal an adaptation it seems to be. It almost looks like some hyper-advanced AI must have translated the original game straight into a TV show, or something.

While I’m a fan of many of the actors in this production, seeing this in action is sure to spark a conversation about what happens when a video game is so closely transformed into a television show that it’s almost indistinguishable from the original. . While I would argue that Paramount’s adaptation of Halo used to be spiritually attuned to much of the source materialthat is how deviated greatly from the events in the game because it was set in a parallel universe, and probably struggled to gain a lot of fans because of that.

Most adaptations need to take creative liberties, as some experiences don’t translate well to different media. HBOs The last of usmight reveal, however, that the standard way of adapting video games loosely may not be necessary when the original material is this strong.
