Merrick Garland appoints special counsel to oversee Trump investigations

Donald Trump has finally lost his battle to prevent Democrat-led House committees from getting his tax returns, mounting a sprint of investigators with Democratic lawmakers to review them before the next Congress is sworn in.

After years of trying to protect his tax returns from being released, Trump on Tuesday saw a final defeat, ironically at the hands of the conservative majority he himself installed on the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, New York prosecutors await a ruling in the tax fraud case against the Trump Organization after they dropped their case on Monday after only two witnesses took the stand.

And in Washington, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the member of the Trump Covid response team who became the main target of the Maga right, gave his final press conference on Tuesday as director of the country’s top agency for fighting the infectious disease.

Dr. Fauci’s tenure at NIAID led to his celebration as a hero among Democrats and many other Americans who looked to him as the primary source of information about the government’s efforts to fight Covid-19.

A federal judge warned Donald Trump to rule on his lawyers, and fast, pending an indictment from writer E Jean Carroll who accused Trump of raping her in a Manhattan department store in the 1990s.

The warning came Tuesday, at a conference in a libel suit filed by Ms. Carroll after Mr. Trump called the writer’s allegations, first aired in an excerpt of her memoir published in New York magazine, false and an attempt to generate publicity.

Why do Democrats care about Donald Trump’s tax returns?

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court dealt Donald Trump the final blow in his years-long battle to shield his tax returns from Congress.

It was a victory for the Democrats on an issue that now seems almost antiquated – the question of Mr Trump’s finances faded into the background for many in the media and the Democrats, especially after January 6 and Mr Trump’s attempts to undo the 2020 elections.

Now that the House Ways and Means Committee is ready to receive copies of Mr. Trump’s tax returns from many years, it’s worth looking back to refresh our memory of why those documents are exactly so important.

Conservatives are bemoaning Trump’s special counsel’s wife’s ties to Michelle Obama

Conservatives are outraged after it emerged that the wife of the prosecutor appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to determine whether to face criminal charges against Donald Trump is apparently a Democratic donor who was involved in a documentary about Michelle Obama.

Jack Smith, a career prosecutor at the Justice Department, was wiretapped by Garland earlier this month to make the decision on Mr Trump’s legal fate. Notably, it followed Trump’s announcement that he would be visiting the White House for a third time.

It has now been revealed through media reports that Mr Smith’s wife Katy Chevigny was a producer of the former first lady’s 2020 documentary Become, based on her memoir of the same name.

Georgia runoff: Why one Senate seat is crucial for Democrats

All eyes are on Georgia as the hotly contested U.S. Senate race moves into a second round next month.

The importance of the race remains high, even though the Democrats now have a guaranteed Senate majority for the next two years. If they retain the seat currently held by Senator Raphael Warnock, the party will solidify its majority in the upper chamber to 51 votes, even without the vice president’s casting vote.

On Tuesday, a woman came forward to describe her experience of having an abortion purportedly paid for by Herschel Walker, the Republican nominee, at a press conference hosted by Gloria Allred.

Get ready for the era of Hakeem Jeffries as Nancy Pelosi bows

If Donald Trump returns to the White House in 2025, there is a possibility that one of the Democrats who led his first impeachment will be on the other side of the negotiating table.

Hakeem Jeffries, the New York congresswoman, is poised to take over as minority leader as Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced last week that she will not seek reelection for Democratic leadership.
