Two astrophotographers have teamed up to capture an alien photo of the moon, taking more than 200,000 shots to create a single image.

Andrew McCarthy and Connor Matherne teamed up last November to push their photography skills to the limit. Their final product was posted online on Saturday and is currently getting a lot of attention on Reddit.

The two stargazers first connected through Reddit and then Instagram, sharing and commenting on each other’s work over the past three or four years. After recognizing each other’s strengths in photography, they decided to team up for a photo shoot of Earth’s moon.

“When he and I put our heads together, we were able to create something odd for both of us, which is cool,” McCarthy told NPR. “The whole is put together like a mosaic and each tile consists of thousands of photos.”

McCarthy said he specializes in detailed photography, taking tens of thousands of photos to capture the geographic features on the lunar surface. Matherne, who prefers deep space photos, specializes in colors.

Over the course of one evening, McCarthy shot more than 200,000 detailed photos of the moon from Arizona, while Matherne took another 500 photos from Louisiana to capture color data. They combined their work by stacking the photos to create a detailed image of the moon in spectacular colors.

“Andrew was aiming purely for the detail side, while I was aiming purely for the color side,” Matherne said. “That allowed us to get the full moon.”

To capture all the colors and details on the lunar surface, Andrew McCarthy and Connor Matherne focused on different aspects of the shoot. McCarthy took more than 200,000 photos focusing on the details of the moon, and Matherne shot another 500 to capture the vibrant colors.

They spent the next nine months exchanging edits and ideas about the edits, using photo editing programs to produce the best possible image.

Matherne and McCarthy said that while their work is technical, it is not out of reach for other photography enthusiasts. All it takes is a camera, tripod and a star tracker. Aspiring astrophotographers can take their work to the next level by buying a telescope, but the two said it’s best to develop basic photography skills before taking the next step.

But astrophotography is not as simple as point and shoot. One of the hardest parts of the job, McCarthy said, is exercising patience.

A successful shoot relies heavily on clear skies and limited light pollution. Most nights McCarthy walks away empty-handed, but that makes successful shoots all the more meaningful.

“If you can’t handle that, you won’t get to the point where you get these great shots,” he said. “Anyone can do it, but it takes a special temperament.”
