UFC Orlando results, video highlights: Stephen Thompson batters Kevin Holland until corner stoppage

Date:

Catch up on what’s happening tonight with the UFC Orlando main event between Stephen Thompson and Kevin Holland, taking place from the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.

Former UFC welterweight title challenger Stephen Thompson takes a big gamble by taking on the unranked, but highly skilled, Kevin Holland. There are many potential downsides to Thompson here, without a seeming plethora of benefits.

We’ve all seen Holland beaten by Khamzat Chimaev in less than half a round at UFC 279, and we’ve seen him knocked down several times by other fighters. However, his offensive play is quite powerful and he now has an opponent in front of him in “Wonderboy” who will be more than willing to take part in a five-round fight.

This can end up being a bit of a chess match, but you can fully expect both sides to have a good time the entire time. You could probably make a drinking game where you have to take a shot every time one of the fighters laughs during the match, but definitely don’t!

The main card of UFC Orlando: Stephen Thompson vs. Kevin Holland is scheduled at 10pm ET/7pm PT and can be seen at ESPN+.

Stephen Thompson beats. Kevin Holland by TKO at 5:00 of Round 4: Welterweight

Holland launched himself on Thompson to get things going, trying to deal with the footwork of ‘Wonderboy’. A stiff straight line from Thompson slowed Holland’s aggression, but a gash formed around Stephen’s left eye. Holland then flew on Thompson and then connected with a big knee. Holland then shot Thompson with a right cross that wobbled him, then attempted to finish him against the cage. Thompson stayed tough and then started scoring again with his straight punches.

Thompson launched some head kicks to start the second act, but Holland did well to block them. Thompson then blitzed Holland with his hands, putting Holland on the defensive. The momentum didn’t last long on Thompson’s side, as Holland began punching and kicking his way back to the center. Holland even hit a takedown, but stood up and allowed Thompson to do the same. The athletes began to go blow by blow, with every man coming clean.

Holland scored an early takedown in the third round, but again agreed to get back up. The Thompson straights continued to be lightning fast. It exploded inwards and overran Holland, then fired back from the danger zone. Holland slowed down, but he did well with the punches. Thompson started making his kicks fly and even scored a spinning wheel kick. Holland’s chin was definitely on display this round.

Holland seemed to experience a problem with his right hand going into the fourth frame. He started to clench, but as soon as Thompson broke free, he started pounding Holland with vicious body kicks. After a brief timeout from a cup shot to Holland, Thompson began throwing spinning kicks at Kevin’s head. Holland ate these strikes like a champ, but he was thrashed. A big overhand punch from Thompson dropped Holland, but it was Stephen’s turn to allow Kevin to get up. Holland’s corner stopped the fight on the crutch, preventing further damage to their fighter.
