USMNT’s Gregg Berhalter lied about Gio Reyna injury

Eric Wynalda claims to have the answer to one of the great mysteries of the 2022 World Cup.

Gio Reyna, a 20-year-old budding star for the US men’s team, sat out the opening game of the World Cup against Wales, a 1-1 draw, playing only the last 11 1/2 minutes of the game. goalless draw against England on Friday.

American football fans are perplexed as to why Reyna, who plays professionally for Borussia Dortmund in Germany, has not been given more playing time. Reyna has suffered some nagging injuries and USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter cited them as why Reyna didn’t play against Wales.

Speaking on Twitter Spaces with the Los Angeles Times, Wynalda, who played on the USMNT from 1990-2000, said that Berhalter is not telling the truth and that this situation causes “internal discord” in the team.

“With Gio Reyna now out of the lineup, which has been a huge controversy within the team – even his own teammates want him on the pitch, and there seems to be some internal strife with the manager Gregg Berhalter,” said Wynalda.

“I don’t know how much to comment on that, but I’ve been trying to comfort Gio’s father, Claudio, with all the trimmings over the past few days. He was fit to play. Berhalter lied to the media and said there was an injury. He asked the player to join the story, which caused a rift between the two of them, and now he’s on the bench, which is a real shame. The situation should have been handled very differently.”

In explaining why Reyna didn’t play Wales, Berhalter said: ‘It was trying to get him up to speed. There was some stuffiness to watch out for. At the stage of the game we were in, we went with Jordan, who we thought could give us speed and power.

However, Reyna claimed to have been at full strength.

“No, I feel great. I feel very good. I feel ready to go,” he said. “I felt good, I felt ready to go, but it was just his [Berhalter’s] decision. He doesn’t need to tell me why he didn’t put me in or why he does. But I’m 100 percent. I’m ready to go.”

The United States will play Iran against Iran on Tuesday at 2pm on FOX in their final group stage match, needing a win to advance to the knockout stages.
