What States Have Them and How to Get Money

At the end of 2022, the Tax and Customs Administration determined that many people could still receive an incentive benefit in 2023, or perhaps at least a discount on their tax returns from previous years. This includes about 25 million Californians who could qualify. People in six other states could also qualify.

The IRS stated in November 2022 that an absence of stimulus checks last year could mean that “refunds in 2023 may be smaller.”

“Taxpayers will not receive an additional stimulus payment with a 2023 tax refund because there were no economic impact payments for 2022,” the agency said.

Many residents who have paid taxes in California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and South Carolina are eligible for some type of credit.

Economic stimulus checks are prepared for printing at the Philadelphia Financial Center on May 8, 2008 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A new round of incentive discounts will be available in 2023 for those who qualify.

California residents who earned less than $500,000 in fiscal year 2020 and filed their income taxes before October 15, 2021, are eligible for the state’s middle class tax refund, which will be paid from January 30 – February 14.

California’s flexed rebate program applies to a wide variety of recipients. For example, anyone who claimed anywhere from $125,001 to $250,000, and with no dependents, will have access to $200 in stimulus.

According to California’s Franchise Tax Board, married or joint applicants with an accumulated income of less than $150,000 for the 2020 tax year qualify for the maximum $1,050 in stimulus, which also accounts for inflation.

As of January 13, 2023, more than $9 billion in stimulus funds have already been distributed to 31,650,087 California taxpayers, according to the California’s Franchise Tax Board website.

The final push of stimulus payments in California will be with a debit card and for resident filers who have changed their address after filing their 2020 tax returns.

In Colorado, a $750 rebate is split between individual filers and $1,500 for joint filers. Anyone who has not yet received their stimulus rebates or who have applied for an extension will get their money back by the end of January, according to the Colorado Cash Back program.

Idaho Governor Brad Little signed a $500 million bill last September that states residents who file in 2020 and 2021 will be eligible for 10 percent of their tax returns or $300, whichever is the is largest.

Illinois residents can get two discounts if they qualify. One is for income and the other based on property taxes. The return on income is between $50-100, based on a claimed income of $200,000 or less for individuals and $400,000 or less for married or joint filers.

New Mexico residents are already receiving discounts across three payments — split across different payout structures. While more than 2 million rebates were issued in September, those who have not yet received them have until May of this year to file their 2021 tax returns.

Pennsylvanians can receive a maximum standard rebate of $650, or $975 for those eligible for additional rebates. The income limit is $35,000 per year for homeowners and $15,000 per year for those who rent.

South Carolina will begin providing discounts to residents who file their 2021 tax returns before February 15. Those are part of the state’s $1 billion rebate.
