If you need to sort things out with a Social Security office, you’ll want to have it done before Labor Day weekend—otherwise, you’ll have to wait until September 6. The social security offices are closed on September 5 to respect the Labor Day.

The Social Security offices have been open since April 7 during normal post-pandemic business hours. The telephone lines at the field offices are also open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Fortunately, there are online social security services available, including:

  • Applying for retirement, disability, or Medicare benefits.
  • Check status of a claim.
  • Apply for a replacement Social Security card.
  • Receive proof of income.
  • View your earnings or estimate future benefits.
  • Manage your monthly benefits.

If you can’t find the answers you’re looking for online (or need in-person help from someone in a local office), you can schedule a face-to-face meeting for faster service. Walk-ins are also accepted, but the Social Security website warns that there can be long waiting times in such circumstances.

Additionally, SSA.gov says the morning after a federal holiday is one of the busiest times for Social Security offices, so expect additional wait times.
