One person has died and two others have been hospitalized after being struck by lightning in Winter Springs. According to reports, it happened near 1300 Park Villa Place, behind Keeth Elementary. The Seminole County Fire Department reports that the victims are a child and two women, including an 18-year-old. According to the Winter Springs Police Department, an adult woman of unknown age who accompanied the child has died. Winter Springs Police Department Captain Doug Seely said a mother and other family members were waiting by a tree in Trotwood Park for a child to be picked up from school when lightning struck. Original reports stated the only victims were a child and an adult, but the 18-year-old later called medics after being told she was fine, officials said. She was awake and in stable condition when they returned. A dog was also involved in the lightning strike, but they were unable to locate it. The district tweeted that Keeth Elementary will have counselors on campus Friday to support students and staff. “I don’t even know why I was looking, but I saw people on the ground and someone waved over the crossing guard for help and I was like, ‘Oh no, something’s up,’ said Hope Reynolds, a parent. Another parent Joe White said he was about 5 feet away from him when it happened: “It sounds kind of cliche, but you just wanted to help. People were down. Call 911. I already had my phone off,” White said.
