Two police officers were shot and killed early Wednesday morning at a Motel 6 in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, authorities confirmed. The officers, whose names have not been made public, were responding to a call for service to the Bay St. Louis Police Department from the motel, which is located off a stretch of Interstate Highway 90 that runs through the Gulf Coast city, officials said. .
Bay St. Louis Police Chief Tody Schwartz has reportedly confirmed that the officers killed are Sergeant Steven Robin and Officer Branden Estorffe, according to CBS affiliate WWL-TV.
Agents arrived at Motel 6 before 4:30 a.m. local time Wednesday, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said in a press release. When they did, both officers encountered a subject — identified as a woman by state bureau — who shot and killed one officer and wounded a second agent before committing suicide, the agency said. The first officer was pronounced dead at the scene, WWL-TV reported, while the second officer succumbed to his injuries later Wednesday morning, authorities confirmed.
“MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and is gathering evidence,” the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said in a statement. “Additional information may be made public at a later date.”
The suspect’s name has not been released and the nature of the service call that initially brought officers to the motel is still unknown.
Once the investigation is complete, agents from the state bureau will turn over their findings to the attorney general’s office, the statement said.
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves addressed the shooting in a post shared with Twitter.
“Early this morning, two Bay St. Louis police officers were tragically shot and killed in the line of duty,” he wrote in part, adding, “I am heartbroken by this terrible loss of two brave law enforcement officers. I pray for their families, friends, their fellow officers and the entire community of Bay St. Louis. Every day in Mississippi, our law enforcement officers risk their lives in continuous and repeated acts of selfless sacrifice for their community.”
