World Cup 2022 highlights: France defeats England, 2-1

The FIFA World Cup 2022 continued on FOX on Saturday with France beating England 2-1 at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, Qatar in the final quarter-final of the tournament.

The reigning World Cup champion France hopes to participate Italy and Brazil as the only nations in World Cup history to have won back-to-back tournaments. With Saturday’s victory, France has now won its last 12 World Cup matches.

France will advance to Morocco, who beat Portugal in Wednesday’s semi-final earlier on Saturday.

Here are the best plays!

France 2, England 1

6:’ Total effort

French striker Olivier Giroud did not hold back as he approached the goal early in the game.

11′: Big save

Giroud made another attempt minutes later, this time from a header, but it was saved by England keeper Jordan Pickford.

17′: Sweet attack

Midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni was the star of the show early on, starting the scoring with a goal for France.

22′: Saved!

France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris came up with crucial back-to-back saves as England knocked – first on defender Luke Shaw, then on the England captain Harry Kane – around the Three lions completely off the board.

With Saturday’s start, Lloris became the most capped player in French national men’s team history (143).

Meanwhile, Kane was not given a penalty for this challenge, as he made another play near the net moments later.

29′: Denied!

Kane took another shot on the half hour mark, and it was again saved by Lloris, this time in the top right corner.

France took the 1-0 lead into half time, but not before Antoine Griezmann picked up the first yellow card of the game in the 43rd minute.

47′: Warm up

Ousmane Dembélé received a yellow card in the first minute of the second half, but that did not upset France’s rhythm. Lloris kept making one great play after another, saving Jude Bellingham’s shot right out of the gate.

54′: Penalty kick

The situation changed when Bukayo Saka fouled in the penalty area early in the second half. Kane took the penalty against his Tottenham teammate Lloris in the first game they had played against each other in five and a half years.

With that goal, Kane tied Wayne Rooney for most goals in England men’s national team history with 53.

80′: What could have been

England were awarded their second penalty, this time after a VAR review, and Theo Hernández was shown a late yellow card.

Kane took his second penalty kick against his club-mate Lloris, but this time he missed the net.

France thus remained in the lead, 2-1.

90’+11′: up to the wire

It all came down to England’s Marcus Rashford, who had just checked in in the 85th minute. In the very last minute of Saturday’s game he was awarded a free kick, but his shot went just a little too high over the net.

In doing so, France secured victory and became the first reigning champions to advance to the semifinals since Brazil did so in 1962 en route to back-to-back titles.

Set up the stage

Saturday’s game was the third World Cup meeting between these two countries, with England winning the previous two games in 1966 and ’82.

However, France had lost just one of their past eight encounters with England: a friendly in November 2015.
