550K lose power in Texas; wind chill hits New England

As much of the south of the country slowly began to thaw on Thursday after a deadly encounter with a bad winter weather system, northern states braced for an arctic blast that was expected to send temperatures well below zero in some places.

The death toll rose to 10 — seven of them in Texas — and 550,000 homes and businesses in four states were left without power as the four-day cold front that brought ice, hail and snow continued to take its toll even as it abated.

“As the icing transitions to rain and then ends across the south to mid-south, the hazards will continue because thawing ice can still cause trees and tree limbs to break,” according to the National Weather Service.

Canceled flights to and from US airports were nearly 750 early Thursday afternoon, about 35% of those at Dallas Forth Worth International, but that’s significantly less than the thousands over the past few days.

Now the problem area becomes the north, where wind chill can drop to minus 50 due to a cold front moving in from Canada. The system is expected to reach the northern plains and upper Midwest on Thursday and move into the Northeast and parts of the Mid-Atlantic on Friday.

The New England states are facing particularly frigid temperatures, dropping by 40-50 degrees Thursday through Friday in some cases. People in New England and New York state also prepared for lake-effect winds and heavy snow that could create dangerous travel conditions across the region.

Jay Broccolo, director of weather operations at an observatory on New Hampshire’s Mount Washington — which held the world record for the fastest wind gust for decades — said Thursday that wind speeds can exceed 100 mph.

“We take safety very seriously at the higher peaks,” Broccolo said, “and this weekend’s forecast looks pretty punchy, even by our standards.”

Other developments in winter weather:

►A wind chill warning was in effect Thursday in northern New York, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and parts of Connecticut, the weather service said. “These chills can cause frostbite to exposed skin in just 10 minutes,” the weather service said.

►In Austin, the capital of Texas, where there are more than 150,000 outages, the utility and mayor warned residents they could be without light and heating until Thursday or Friday.

►Nearly 74,000 power customers in Arkansas still had no electricity as of Thursday afternoon, as did 23,000 in Mississippi and 19,000 in Tennessee.

Power outages continue to be a problem in Texas

Although the ice storm warning has expired throughout Texas, power outages continued to affect hundreds of thousands across the state. More than 432,000 homes and businesses were without power by early Thursday afternoon, according to PowerOutage.us.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said at a news conference Thursday that the winter conditions have reminded city residents of the “fear and trauma” they experienced during the February 2021 winter storm that killed at least 200 people. came.

According to Watson, restoring electricity was “very challenging” due to the length and nature of the storm.

Warming trend to bring relief to the south

The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center predicted an end to the damaging ice storm that has swept Texas to Tennessee on Thursday as “a final surge of moisture slides east.”

According to AccuWeather’s senior meteorologist Tom Kines, temperatures in the south would rise above freezing on Thursday afternoon.

Dallas and Memphis, Tennessee, could see temperatures in the mid-30s on Thursday, and the sunshine would warm the Dallas area to the mid-40s and nearly 50 degrees Friday, forecasters said.

However, overnight temperatures could dip below 32 degrees through Friday, and while the change is unlikely to bring precipitation, Kines said frozen wet patches could make roads slippery Friday morning.

Most of the impacts were behind people in the Dallas and Fort Worth area Thursday morning as the precipitation slowly cleared, said meteorologist Hunter Reeves of the Weather Service.

“There will still be some muddy patches and a lot of people will see better road conditions, while some will hardly see any improvement at all,” Reeves told USA TODAY, adding that a more general improvement in road conditions would begin Friday.

Ice storm warning continues in Oklahoma, Arkansas and other states

An ice storm warning remained in effect Thursday in parts of several states, the National Weather Service in Memphis, Tennessee, said.

Officials continued to discourage travel, but people who must drive should carry an extra flashlight and food and water in their vehicles, they said.

The ice storm warning affected more than 3 million people Thursday in parts of Arkansas, southwestern Tennessee, northern Mississippi and Oklahoma.

The National Weather Service office in Dallas/Fort Worth said ice storm warnings were withdrawn Thursday morning as conditions improved and warnings were no longer in effect in the area, though power outages and tree damage were still possible due to ice.

Wind-chill advice in Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin

In parts of Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin, wind chill is in effect through Friday. Chills can reach as low as 50 degrees below zero.

Officials advised people to wear appropriate winter clothing outside, including a hat and gloves.
