Alex Murdaugh: Who is the disgraced lawyer and why is he on trial?
Alex Murdaugh’s five shocking words in the wake of the murder of his wife and son were revealed Monday at Colleton County Courthouse in Walterboro, South Carolina.
Jurors heard testimony about Mr Murdaugh’s second interview with law enforcement officials on June 10, 2021 – three days after he was charged with the shooting deaths of Maggie, 52, and Paul, 22, at the family’s Islandton estate on June 7, 2021.
In the interview, SLED Special Agent Jeff Croft testified that Mr. Murdaugh told him, “I treated him so badly.”
As prosecutors tried to suggest that the legal scion, 54, had slipped during the interview, Mr Murdaugh was seen shaking his head and appearing to say “that’s not what I said” in court.
Audio of the interview has also cast doubt, some believing he’s actually saying, “They treated him so badly.”
Agent Croft is expected to be questioned by Mr Murdaugh’s lawyers when the trial resumes Tuesday morning.
The trial is just one of Mr. Murdaugh’s troubles in a story of a failed assassin plot, multimillion-dollar fraud schemes and unexplained deaths.
Defense makes mistakes when collecting crime scenes
Defense attorneys in the trial of South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh continued Monday to question the way state agents gathered and analyzed evidence in the shooting deaths of Murdaugh’s wife and son.
During the first three days of testimony, prosecutors typically called crime scene officers and technicians to present evidence to the jury that investigators are likely to elaborate on later. In last week’s opening statement, they described their case as a puzzle.
However, during the questioning of witnesses, defense attorneys have raised questions suggesting that the metaphorical puzzle pieces are not clear or that the prosecutors are not putting them all on the table.
