Trump news latest: Furious Trump denounces Garland’s special counsel appointment as ‘disgrace’ and ‘unfair’

Date:

Donald Trump launches 2024 presidential campaign

Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed Justice Department veteran and former war crimes prosecutor in The Hague, Jack Smith, as special counsel to consider whether former President Donald Trump should face criminal charges.

Mr. Garland made the announcement at a press conference on Friday and said Mr. Smith will focus on the possibility of charges arising from the investigation into the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol uprising and classified Mar-a-Lago documents.

The former president called the move the “worst politicization of justice” and said, “I’m not going to participate in it.”

The news comes just days after he gave an unusually somber speech announcing his intention to run for president in 2024.

Meanwhile, author E Jean Carroll, who claims Donald Trump raped her in a New York department store in the 1990s, is suing him again, accusing him of battery use.

Ms. Carroll is bringing her case under a New York law that gives adult survivors of sexual assault the chance to file civil suits even after the statute of limitations on an alleged crime has expired.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre says of President Joe Biden’s knowledge of the appointment of a special counsel to investigate whether former President Donald Trump should face criminal charges:

No, he didn’t know, we didn’t know. The Ministry of Justice decides independently on criminal investigations. We are not involved… We were not informed in advance. We were not aware of this investigation.

Donald Trump has criticized the appointment of a special counsel to lead the investigation into his dealings with classified information and the January 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol.

“I’ve been going through this for six years — for six years I’ve been through this, and I’m not going through it again,” Trump told Fox News Digital Friday after the council was unveiled. “And I hope the Republicans have the courage to fight this.”

Trump lashes out at ‘worst politicization of justice’, says ‘I’m not going to get involved’

Former President Donald Trump lashed out at the Justice Department’s decision to appoint a special counsel to oversee the investigation into his role in inciting the uprising at the Capitol and the presence of classified material in his home in Florida.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital shortly after Attorney General Merrick Garland’s announcement, Mr. Trump said, “I’ve been going through this for six years — six years I’ve been going through this, and I’m not going through it no more. . And I hope the Republicans have the courage to fight this.”

He continued, “I was found innocent of everything for six years – from false impeachments to Mueller, who found no conspiracy, and now I have to do it more?”

“It is not acceptable. It’s so unfair. It’s so political,” Trump said.

“I’m not going to participate. I’m not going to participate in this.”

He added: “It is unbelievable that they are allowed to do this. This is the worst politicization of justice in our country.”

Extraordinary circumstances mean ‘it is in the public interest to appoint special counsel’

Attorney General Merrick Garland said the appointment would allow prosecutors in the cases against former President Donald Trump to continue their work “unquestionably guided” only by the facts and the law.

“The Justice Department has long recognized that in certain extraordinary cases it is in the public interest to appoint a special prosecutor to independently conduct an investigation and prosecution,” said Mr. Garland from the Justice Department podium.

“Based on recent developments, including the former president’s announcement that he is running for president in the next election and the incumbent president’s stated intention to also run, I have come to the conclusion that in general importance is to appoint a special counsel. .”

Trump rhetoric blamed for a 145% rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans…and he’s at it again

With Donald Trump’s return to the campaign trail this week, another familiar theme also resurfaced: racist language intended to belittle Asian-Americans.

Mr. Trump officially entered the 2024 race on Tuesday, ending months of speculation about whether he would want to and giving us the first real preview of a rematch between him and President Joe Biden.

But before officially entering the race, the ex-president spent weeks, if not months, teasing his eventual campaign launch and doing what he does best: attacking his rivals on the political scene. And it is in that arena where Mr. Trump has indulged in the hateful, racist rhetoric he displayed earlier in 2020.
